Hellicane: Poets Respond to Hurricane Katrina

by Hurricane Survivor, New Orleans, Louisiana\r\n\r\nWho tried to steal this city of mine\r\nHurricane Katrina.....A moment in time\r\n\r\nWhy did this happen to a city so unique\r\nWe can point to and blame the Government\r\nFor being so very weak\r\n\r\nOur levees were dismissed\r\nSince the days of Governor Long\r\nFor the Government should\'ve secured them\r\nAnd made them big & strong\r\n\r\nSo is it any wonder\r\nThat Katrina came to be\r\nAnd swallowed up the city\r\nFor the whole world to see\r\n\r\nIt destroyed our people and the culture we all love\r\nAs they scrambled & screamed for help from above\r\nAnd that help came so slow, as lives & homes were lost\r\nFor as the storm grew, the city paid the cost\r\n\r\nWhere once there was Jazz and Gumbo\r\nAnd dancing in the streets\r\nThe city became silent\r\nAs we wept in disbelief\r\n\r\nThe faces of the helpless\r\nWill forever remain real clear\r\nAs the city tries to recover\r\nAnd struggles from year to year\r\n\r\nThe Jazz will return to Bourbon\r\nAnd the Steamboats will roll along\r\nBut Hurricane Katrina\r\nIn our hearts will live on\r\n\r\nFor when history is recorded\r\nAnd New Orleans is defined\r\nWe\'ll always remember Katrina\r\nMore than a moment in time!
