This is my son and one of our many pets we have to leave behind. People around the country…

A young man wearing a gray cap and blue striped shirt sits in a recliner, holding a CD, while a gray-and-white cat rests on his lap.

This is my son and one of our many pets we have to leave behind. People around the country have no clue, when you have to decide between your human children, and your animal children. It's the most heart wrenching thing I've ever had to do, and the feeling will haunt me the rest of my life. We recovered 5, found 3 dead, and are still missing others.

This my poem to my pets I lost in the storm. I think this says it all:

Life Is Cruel When Your Heart Can't Sing Dedicated to our cats we lost in Katrina (8/29/05)

The day would come, we'd say goodbye to some The others would stay, knowing their way Our journey home filled with sighs, we got there and sighs turned to cries Layla was gone, dead in the street Caramel in the alley, lost to defeat Our smallest baby Rocky, in a bedspring Life is cruel, when your heart can't sing Four still missing, not from our thoughts Continue searching, everywhere - all parts Seven thankfully were found, as they waited at home The only lives we know, that didn't turn to stone Life goes on, but we'll never forget The day Katrina took our babies, and upset The lives they once knew, when our family was true

We miss you all, babies ....
