A storm-damaged house with a partially collapsed roof and downed trees leans against its side, surrounded by a debris-littered, barren yard and a wrecked pickup truck.

Metairie and New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina - 10.23.05

Dad and I drove down some of the streets in the breach neighborhood. We began to notice how terribly dusty everything was around us. We continued to comment to each othere about the silence that was here. We still heard no birds. It was here where we got our first whiff of mildew smells from the mold growing inside these homes.
