This is a photo of my bedroom after hurricane Katrina. My mother and I lived near Baptist…

A flood-damaged bedroom shows a stained mattress and box spring with a green pillow and patterned bedding, resting above an exposed lower mattress covered in water stains and mold, on dark wood flooring.

This is a photo of my bedroom after hurricane Katrina. My mother and I lived near Baptist Memorial hospital in Uptown/Central City and our home received approximately 5 feet of water. We were displaced for almost a year and had to replace everything we owned over the next 3 years as FEMA denied our claim saying we living in the wrong Zip Code and that we could not have received any damage. It was a very difficult time for us but it made us both stronger and wiser.
