Ashley Segrave August 22, 2006 My husband, David, two year old son Noah, and I found out about the storm the day before it hit. We were not prepared. We left Sunday about 2 p.m., followed by some friends. We arrived in Tampa, Florida at about 11 a.m. the next day. Tampa was the closest place we could find a hotel. It was a very long drive. The first day we did not do much, just waited to make sure our loved ones were ok. On Tuesday we heard of the flooding, so we were frantic because both of our parents stayed. A few days later and a few newscasts later, we received a call from family, who evacuated, telling us to come to Crestview, Florida to be with them. On Friday, I finally heard from my parents. It was the best phone call I have ever received. My father-in-law was still missing. He had stayed at his home on Carr Drive, which was the hardest hit area in Slidell. Every day that went by seemed so long. The following Tuesday, he called and said that Katrina took his home, but he was ok. On Wednesday, David went back to Slidell to tarp roofs. Katrina had taken our crab boat and blew it on the railroad tracks about two miles from where we had it tied up. She had also swallowed all our crab traps. We were out of business. My son and I stayed in Florida with our family because our home was no place for children anymore. Some very nice people from a church in Destin helped us with a place to stay for the whole family (only about thirty people). We stayed there for several weeks. My friend\'s electricity finally got turned on, so David came and got us and we stayed there until we\r\ngot a FEMA trailer. Unfortunately, we are still in the FEMA trailer as we remodel our home.
