It\'s been a year since Hurricane Katrina, and my city is still in shambles! Certain pockets of the city (New Orleans)that sustained minimal damage, now maintain a semi-normal existance. Most neighborhoods remain desolate and deserted.Fema trailers abound. Many trailers sit vacant in front of gutted houses. Some residents got tired of waiting on trailers, and decided not to return. I have returned, as have my Mother, Father, 5 siblings, as well as my 94 year-old Grandmother. After evacuating to Los Angeles, and living there for 6 months, my Grandmother grew increasingly weak, depressed, and homesick. My sister and I flew to Los Angeles in February to bring her back home. She had expressed that she didn\'t want to die in Los Angeles. Before Katrina, my Grandmother lived alone in her own home, and was able to take care of herself. She now lives in a one bedroom apartment with my parents until my 78 year old father rebuilds their house. My Father had finished paying for his house a few years earlier, but had no flood insurance.\r\nMy Grandmother\'s health has improved some. She is happy to be home again. She sleeps on a day-bed in the living room. She hardly walks anymore. My Father insists that she walk (with her walker)to the table for meals. Other than that, she pretty much stays in bed all day, saying her rosary. After being independent all her life...all she has now are her memories, and her little corner of the room.
