First Communion of John Garrity, the father of Diane Melerine, circa 1937. John Garrity grew up in the Ninth Ward near Holy Cross and moved to Arabi in 1958, where he stayed. His family goes back three generations in New Orleans, having originally come from the Canary Islands. He married Dorothy Pike at Sacred Heart in 1953.\r\n\r\nDiane Melerine lived at 2720 Jackson Blvd., Chalmette, LA, before the storm. Her house was flooded by nine feet of water.
