Hellicane: Poets Respond to Hurricane Katrina

(This poem is dedicated to the people of New Orleans, especially the police and armed forces, most especially my niece and nephew, who are police there. They risked everything and lost a lot to stay and help others, as is the duty that they took on.)\r\n\r\nA wall of water bearing down on the city\r\nHigh, so high that it can\'t be kept at bay\r\n\r\nThe masses pull together for strength and comfort\r\nBehind their shield of blue and green clad warriors\r\n\r\nProtecting and serving as they\'re sworn to do\r\nPitting their courage and lives against the storm\r\n\r\nDaring it to do it\'s worst, defiantly proud\r\nSheltering those they serve with iron wills\r\n\r\nStanding tall, smiling against the odds\r\nAs the wind howls on and the rain falls so hard\r\n
