I snapped this photo on Ponce de Leon Street in Mid-City New Orleans (my neighborhood) in July 2007. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, rents were much lower. A shotgun double in this neighborhood could be found for $600 and a studio would be about $400. Landlords blame soaring insurance costs for the rent increases. (Prior to Katrina, the half a shotgun double I now rent cost only $300/month!)
