\r\nThe Clarence L. Barney Student of the Week Program announced their first Students of the Year award winners at a banquet honoring the 27 eligible students Friday, January 11, 2008. Katherine Klimitas of Loyola University (formerly of Benjamin Franklin High School), May Mzayek of Benjamin Franklin and Gerald Youngblood of McDonogh 35 Senior High School each received a $5000 scholarship for their outstanding achievements inside and out of the classroom. Their accomplishments fly in the face of those who bemoan public education in New Orleans. Yes, public schooling has worked for some students and educational reformers can learn a great deal as to how to rebuild the public system from those who overcome.\r\n
