With approximately 40% of the electricity still turned off in New Orleans, this view from the 2600 block of Clover (intersection of Clover St. and Franklin Ave.) in Gentilly, shows how dark one of the major neighborhoods of New Orleans was on Dec. 27 - 121 days after Katrina hit the area. The high beam lights from our vehicle helped us navigate down the dark streets of this Gentilly neighborhood. The only lights that were visible in the background were two blocks east of us from the light posts on top of the I-10 overpass. A FEMA trailer is visible to the left. Although not recommended, a drive into the Lakeview and New Orleans East neighborhoods after sunset will reveal the same darkness.
