My boyfriend and I were living in our first apartment together, off houma on the south side of the interstate. We had only gotten a few inches of water and were able to salvage most of our belongings about 2 weeks after the storm when people were being let back into the city. About 2 weeks after that we returned to our apartment, thinking that we could go sit on our sofa only to find that someone else was already living there. The carpet was taken out and appliances were gone... our sofa, our intertainment system... gone. Even though i had used my own key to get into the apartment, MY apartment, I said sorry to the man standing there with no shirt and we left. Turns out, the contractors were letting the workers live in the apartments while they renovating the place. Had I known then what i know now i wuold have called the cops then and there. Our landlord said that our stuff was \"in storage.\" Before we left the place, the first time we returned to see the damage, I wrote on the driveway in chalk, \"we were here but katrina kicked us out.\" A message to our friends incase they came looking for us. The land lord took that as \"abandonment.\" THEN, entergy billed us for 6 months of energy after the storm because I failed to call them and cancel the account. I just wish i had called the cops that day.
