For hurricane Katrina my family and I evacuated at the last minute with our next door neighbors and their family, who we are very close friends with. We did not have any idea where we were going. We had just spent the entire day packing hurriedly and going through the phone book calling every hotel listed in surrounding states. Every single place we called was booked, no vacancies. So we loaded up our cars and began to just drive west out of harm\'s way with no particular destination. Our caravan included two senior citizens, three adults, two children, a toddler, and two full size dogs. When we reached Houston we found one hotel where people hadn\'t shown for their reservations and there was only one room open. This room contained one bathroom, two double beds, a sofa bed, and a chair--there were eight of us and two animals. But the hotel allowed us to book the room given our circumstances, so we all crammed into this room for one week. We had absolutely no cell phone service to keep in touch with anyone outside of our immediate group, and only TV news reports that changed hourly as to what was happening back home. It was a very stressful and emotional week. We thought we might have to permanently relocate. We rented a house because the hotel room just couldn\'t work for us any longer, we were crammed on top of each other, everyone was stressed and fighting, and if we didn\'t get into a bigger place we were going to kill each other. When we were just checking out of our hotel room and beginning to move our stuff into the home we rented, our neighbor, Jason, received a phone called from his work. He worked for the New Orleans saints, and they called to let him know they were temporarily relocating to San Antonio Texas and that if he would come work with them there they would have a free place for us to stay. So we hit the road towards San Antonio. Our first night of arrival while they were still finding a place for us to stay, we were put in a hotel room with only one queen bed. Everyone was stressed and regretting our decision to drive out that way. The next day however we were accommodated much better. Kent, an accountant for the team who lived in Colorado but also had a home in San Antonio, opened his doors to us. When we arrived there with all our belongings we had a home cooked meal waiting for us. This was the first real meal we had had in weeks and we were very appreciative. No one has ever treated us better than Mr. Kent did; he truly became a member of our family for our time spent there. We have lost contact now but I would love to offer all my love and appreciation to him for his wonderful treatment and kindness in our time of need.
