6:42 PM CDT, August 28, 2005 \r\nBaton Rouge, Louisiana \r\n\r\nThe Bottom Drops Out\r\n\r\nI walked out a minute ago to get something out of the yard. As I was walking in Kaboom! A Heavy sheet of intense rain came up out of nowhere. One minute quiet and still the next minute we\'re socked in with heavy rains. It was as if a huge bucket of water was suddenly turned upside down on us from the sky. The calm is over and the storm is moving in. \r\n\r\nPat, the father of the kid who was visiting my younger son, came to pick him up. We sat in the kitchen eating the brownies I had made and did a little hurricane reminiscing. At the time Hurricane Camille slammed into the Missippi Gulf Coast, my husband Tommy was a linebacker for Broadmoor High School in Baton Rouge. We were slated to play a football game in Biloxi days after the storm. The people there were so demoralized following Camille they wanted to go ahead with the game so they could have something else to focus on.\r\n\r\nPat, Tommy, and I talked about the shock and the devastation we witnessed as we arrived in Biloxi within days after the aftermath. Every building up on the coast had been leveled. All you could see were slabs and steps and chimneys. Everything else was just gone. The bent and twisted trees that made it through that storm remain ever imprinted on my mind - it was if they were crying out at the horror they had witnessed. \r\n\r\nRecently I was at a wedding in Ocean Springs - a little sleepy Mississippi town close to Biloxi on the coast. I was sitting outside the reception Hall on a bench overlooking a tree-lined street. Even though its been thirty years or so, and the area has recovered I could still see the ever so slightly twisted outlines of trees that had withstood 200 mile per hour winds. Oh, if those trees could talk!\r\n\r\nThe rain has stopped for a moment but the sky is still dark and ominous. \r\n\r\nMargaret Saizan\r\nwww.hurricane-katrina.org \r\n\r\n
