Perry, Contributing Columnist\r\nMarch 19, 2007 \r\n\r\n\"You have to be twice as smart - you have to be twice as good.\" The saying used to be the battle cry for academic achievement and ethical behavior for African Americans. Ma Elsie and other elders knew the consequences of taking standardized tests were less forgiving for the most vulnerable of students. Education for black people has always been \"high stakes.\" Still, she believed that children had to gain the education of determination and pride that only came from beating \"the man\" at his own game.\r\n
